"PSA- A letter to my suicidal best friend" by Karly Valencia
Defeated under the weight of failure, debt, depression, gambling addiction, back pain and a broken marriage I had no idea how to help myself. Hours wasted scrolling meaninglessly online, playing video games, anything to distract me from the hell that was my life. I felt hopeless, but if you ever met me, you would never guess that I was hiding all this pain. My two beautiful children needed me. There was no energy, emotional or physical. Every year was worse than the last. Something had to change, fast. Below, I outlined the steps that gave me the hope and strength in this dark time of my life and a better way out.
We don't want to end our life, we want to end the life we're currently living.
Our environment has more influence on our behavior than you might realize. Think of your mind as a seed and your environment is the soil in which it grows. Clutter and disorganization in your living space will have a direct negative impact on your mood and behavior. Toxic relationships will hold you back and kill your motivation to improve your situation. A lot of content on social media is useless and even harmful to our minds. Changing the stream from which you nurture your mind will have dramatic effect on your mental state and your life.
Certain things in life will drain your time, health, finances, and emotional energy. These parasites need to be removed immediately. Some things are impossible to overcome on our own and will require rehabilitation centers and professional help. These can be drugs, alcohol, gambling and other addictions. Take measures to cut these harmful activities and make them inaccessible. For example, if you are struggling with pornography addiction, install a blocker on all your devices and avoid being alone with your phone or computer. All of us need some help at times and there is nothing embarrassing in that. Ask your friends and/or family who you can trust to keep you accountable to your positive decision for change. If necessary, join a rehabilitation center to overcome some deeply rooted addictions.
"A healthy mind lives in a healthy body." When you take care of yourself, have proper hygiene, good eating habits, not only do you become healthier, but those things are proven to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. When you cut out bad habits, you will notice that you have a lot more free time and this time should be replaced by good habits. Reading, working out, meditation, spending more time with family or good friends and finding a new productive hobby or side hustle are all things that give you lasting enjoyment from life.
True freedom came at the foot of the cross where all my anxiety, burdens, and stress have been completely lifted. When I saw my imperfection and the perfect love of God the Father revealed in the death of His son Jesus Christ for my sins. I fell on my knees in my room and I felt like I was standing right before my creator. That's when I sincerely asked Him to take my broken life and turn it into something worthwhile. He did! Something happens in your mind when you surrender your life to God and everything I mentioned above starts to come naturally to you. It is a concept of living with the Holy Spirit who begins to guide you as you spend more time in prayer and reading of God's word. The word of God begins to live inside of you and work through you not only to help you, but help others around you.
